Mumbai: 3rd Apr 2023 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about an impending heat wave that is expected to last from April to June in many parts of central, eastern, and northwestern India. According to the IMD report, temperatures in the city of Pune are likely to remain above average throughout the summer months.
Heat wave forecast for Maharashtra, including Pune
The IMD has predicted that most parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, will experience higher-than-normal temperatures during the summer. Weather experts have also warned that almost half of Maharashtra, including Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, parts of Marathwada, and some districts of Vidarbha, will feel the impact of the heat wave. Citizens of Pune are also expected to suffer from extreme heat.
According to the head of the IMD department’s weather forecasting, Anupam Kashyapi, while the maximum temperature in Pune is rising and will continue to do so for the next 72 hours, it will not be as intense as a heat wave. Therefore, the city will not be immediately affected by the heat wave.
Unseasonal rainfall forecasted for April 2023
Apart from the heat wave, the IMD has also released a forecast for unseasonal rainfall in April 2023. The report predicts that the entire country will receive normal rainfall (88-112 per cent) during this period, with the northwest, central, and peninsular areas expected to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. However, less than normal rainfall is expected in East and Northeast India, as well as some parts of the West Coast of India.
What are Heat Waves?
Heat waves are prolonged periods of extreme heat and high humidity, which can lead to a range of health problems, including dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. They occur when a high-pressure system traps hot air in a particular region, causing temperatures to rise significantly.
The Impact of Heat Waves on Health
Heat waves can be dangerous for people of all ages, but the elderly, children and those with chronic health conditions are particularly vulnerable. In addition to dehydration and heat exhaustion, prolonged exposure to high temperatures can also lead to heatstroke, which can be life-threatening.
